Was there any element of truth in those? As a group, humans are idiots. We believe what is easy, whether or not it is right or not. There's plenty of "facts" that we believe right now that have no element of truth. Global warming is one of the many. Don't give in to what's easy. If becoming theist will ease you at mind and heart, then go for it. If not, don't believe it. By the way, heretic comes from the latin word heresy, which means to choose.
